A Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) of The United States is a geographical area, in (or adjacent to) a United States Port of Entry, where commercial merchandise, both domestic and foreign, receives the same customs treatment it would if it were outside the commerce of the United States.

About 4 years ago the U.S Department of commerce granted Miami-Dade County the authority to establish the FTZ 281 that stretches from county line to county line. Meaning any company within that county line can apply for and operate as an FTZ.

An FTZ has 3 main advantages. Defer, reduce and eliminate. 

• Defer: A product is transferred into an FTZ site using CBP form 214 without paying duties and or taxes for as long as you need, then it is transported into the U.S and the duty and tax rate is paid after that.
• Reduce: Various products can be transferred into an FTZ site, these products can then be combined to make one finished product which is then transported within the U.S.
• Eliminate: A product is transferred to an FTZ site and then Exported.

Cargo in Transit through the US

It is a common belief that when cargo comes into the U.S. it must pay duties, taxes and must have an entry filed regardless if it’s meant for exportation. This is not always the case, if the cargo is not meant to stay in the U.S. there are many options available, and none of them include paying duties and taxes for cargo that will not be commercialized within the U.S.
